"Then, in 1989, my father moved back to New York and I stopped paying for haircuts and highlights. He worked in in his friend David's shop, a tiny place on the Upper East Side, decorated with photographs of jazz musicians, family and friends and crowded with David's collection of eclectic art and junk. In the window was a sculpture of a banana tree with a snake slithering through it. Next to that stood a white statue of a naked woman with large breasts. My father kept a baseball bat by the door, just in case, because of the vehement, sometimes-violent disapproval from passersby. In addition to hairstyle and fashion magazines, issues of Playboy filled the rack. There were one or two parakeets flying around the shop, as strains of Billie Holiday, Miles Davis or Frank Sinatra filled the air."
